Former lawmaker and spokesperson of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Presidential Campaign Council, Senator Dino Melaye, has sharply criticized Bola Tinubu’s economic policies, excessive borrowing and reckless spending.
Speaking in a statement reported by ARISE News, Melaye expressed concern over the federal government’s growing debt profile, mocking the administration.
“President Tinubu has borrowed so much that we won’t be surprised if he starts borrowing from Opay and Moniepoint,” he said.
Melaye noted that Tinubu, who campaigned on a promise to reduce government waste, has instead approved lavish expenditures and unprecedented borrowing.
He cited the recent purchase of a Cadillac vehicle, a new presidential aircraft, and an increase in the National Assembly’s budget as examples of the administration’s disregard for fiscal responsibility.
“A president who said he was coming to curb wastefulness has bought a Cadillac and an aircraft, increased the budget of the National Assembly, and borrowed like no other president in history,” Melaye said.
His comments follow growing public concern about Nigeria’s debt situation. According to the Debt Management Office (DMO), Nigeria’s total public debt stood at ₦121.67 trillion as of December 2024, with new external loan requests currently under consideration by the National Assembly.
