Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State – The Ilamuren Council of Kingmakers in Ijebu-Ode, led by the Olisa of Ijebu-Ode, Chief Rasheed Adeoye Adesanya (Ademoku II), has officially nominated five princes for the vacant Awujale of Ijebuland throne and forwarded their names to Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, for consideration.
In a letter dated April 14, 2026, and addressed to the governor through the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, the Olisa explained that the nomination process was carried out in line with Section 4(2) of the Chiefs Law of 1957 and the customary laws guiding the selection and succession of the Awujale of Ijebuland.
The development follows the passing of the late Awujale of Ijebuland, Oba (Dr.) Sikiru Kayode Adetona, who died on July 13, 2025, and was laid to rest on July 14, 2025. According to the Olisa, the vacancy created by the monarch’s demise made it necessary to begin the process of selecting a new traditional ruler.
Chief Adesanya stated that several meetings of the Ilamuren-in-Council were held to deliberate on the selection of a new Awujale. He noted that after extensive consultations and deliberations, the kingmakers unanimously agreed to forward five qualified princes to the Ogun State Government for final consideration.
The five nominated princes are:
- Prince Hon. Ademorin Aliu Kuye
- Prince Isiaq Ayodele Adewale Adekoya (Eleruja)
- Prince Onabanjo Abimbola John
- Prince Oluwaseun Waheed Omopenu Onanuga
- Prince Olabode Onanuga
The Olisa explained that the declaration guiding the selection process allows the kingmakers to either unanimously choose one candidate or submit preferred candidates to the state government for a final decision.
He added that the nominees were selected based on their qualifications, experience, antecedents and their potential to further advance the development and prestige of Ijebuland.
Chief Adesanya expressed confidence that whoever emerges as the next Awujale will contribute significantly to the progress of Ijebuland, Ogun State and Nigeria as a whole.
The letter concluded with prayers for the continued prosperity of Ogun State and the enduring greatness of Ijebuland as the process of selecting a new Awujale moves forward.
