Concerned Ijebu-Igbo Youth Hold Peaceful Meeting, Demand Lasting Solution to Electricity Crisis in Ijebu Igbo

The long-standing electricity challenge in Ijebu-Igbo took center stage on Wednesday, August 5, 2026, as concerned youths from across the town gathered at the Ijebu-Igbo Town Hall for an emergency meeting to discuss the poor power supply and find practical solutions.
The meeting, which lasted from 12:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m., brought together youths, community stakeholders and leaders who expressed concern over the effect of the blackout on businesses, security and the general wellbeing of residents.
The meeting opened with a prayer led by Mr. Adesanya Olanrewaju, popularly known as Eggbase.
Speaking during the opening session, one of the conveners, Owoseni Ridwan Kakaki, said the gathering was organized because of the worsening electricity situation in Ijebu-Igbo. He explained that the poor power supply has crippled many businesses and affected the local economy.
He stressed that the meeting was not organized to promote violence or political interests but to peacefully discuss the challenges and identify workable solutions.
During the discussions, several participants shared their views on the issue.
Mr. Babatunde Muili described the electricity problem as one that has existed for many years. He recalled previous engagements with IBEDC officials, where the community was informed that Ijebu-Igbo was on Band E with plans for an upgrade in the future. He also emphasized the need to identify the right authorities to engage in order to achieve lasting solutions.
Mr. Oladipupo Oluwaseun, popularly known as Triple, encouraged residents not to lose hope. He advised that social media should be used responsibly to create awareness while formal letters should be sent to traditional rulers and relevant authorities before taking further action.
Mr. Adesanya Olanrewaju noted that the electricity problem affects every resident and called on the appropriate authorities to pay urgent attention to the situation.
Mr. Idris Animashaun urged residents to always engage community leaders and relevant authorities before taking issues to social media. He disclosed that Ijebu-Igbo had already been upgraded from Band E to Band C, although the improvement would take effect soon. He also highlighted the need for more prepaid meters and revealed that only one of the 15 electricity units serving the Ijebu axis is currently functional. He recommended involving respected community leaders such as Dr. Babatunde Ipaye and Tele Ogunjobi in discussions with IBEDC.
Popular entertainer Mr. Adedeji Ogunnowo, widely known as MC Jazzy, blamed the increasing cases of transformer and cable vandalism on poor security. He urged the community to strengthen security measures to protect electricity infrastructure from scavengers.
Mr. Jubril Odeseye also addressed the issue of scavengers, suggesting that their leaders should ensure members wear uniforms or carry proper means of identification to reduce criminal activities.
Mr. Olayinka explained that the meeting was called to seek solutions and not to create unrest. He argued that steady electricity would reduce vandalism because live transformers are less likely to be targeted. He also appealed to traditional rulers, especially Oba Sopen and Oba Japara, to support efforts aimed at resolving the crisis.
Mr. Abdulbasit stated that stable electricity would improve security across the town. He also advised security agencies to carry out random checks on scavengers to discourage theft of electrical materials.
Mr. Taofeek Ghafar encouraged the youth to continue engaging the Local Government Chairman and other influential stakeholders. He stressed the importance of ensuring that official letters reach all relevant authorities.
The Chairman of the Ijebu-Igbo North Local Government (INLG), Hon. Dr Omobolaji Odusanya confirmed during his remarks that Ijebu-Igbo has been upgraded from Band E to Band C and said the new status would become effective soon.
He commended the organizers for their peaceful approach and praised everyone working for the growth and development of Ijebu-Igbo. He encouraged residents to continue supporting and respecting the town’s leadership while maintaining peace and unity.
The INLG Chairman also urged residents to pay their taxes, noting that the revenue generated would help improve security and protect lives and property. He assured the youth of his support and encouraged them to remain peaceful and focused on achieving lasting solutions.
Also speaking at the meeting, Mr. Idowu Ayodeji, Publisher of MarvelTv Updates, recommended that Community Development Association (CDA) leaders and IBEDC officials in Ijebu-Igbo should hold a joint meeting to address the growing cases of cable theft, transformer vandalism and other electricity-related challenges affecting the town.
At the end of the meeting, participants unanimously agreed that all future advocacy for improved electricity supply must remain peaceful and lawful. They resolved to send formal letters to traditional rulers, government officials, IBEDC and other relevant stakeholders, while continuing discussions with community leaders to find lasting solutions.
The meeting also resolved to strengthen security around electricity facilities, discourage vandalism and continue public awareness through responsible use of social media.
The gathering ended peacefully with participants reaffirming their commitment to work together with all stakeholders to achieve stable and reliable electricity supply for Ijebu-Igbo.
