A cloud of controversy has enveloped the Kogi State University, Anyigba, following the sudden and shocking death of Dr. Olabode Abimbola Ibikunle, one of the institution’s senior lecturers. According to reports, Dr. Ibikunle, a lecturer in the Faculty of Education, died inside a hotel room after what sources describe as a “hot match” encounter with a 200-level female student.
The incident, which has since gone viral on social media, has stirred widespread debate across campuses, educational circles, and the general public. Many students, particularly those from Kogi State University, have flooded X (formerly Twitter), WhatsApp, and Facebook with reactions, some humorous, others critical, but most tinged with shock at the unexpected turn of events.
According to preliminary investigations, Dr. Ibikunle allegedly checked into a local hotel in Anyigba three days ago with a young lady reported to be a 200-level student from the Department of Social Studies Education. Eyewitness accounts suggest that the lecturer arrived at the hotel looking enthusiastic, and that he had reportedly consumed multiple energy drinks, possibly to sustain his performance.
Sources close to the investigation claim that Dr. Ibikunle acted like someone preparing for a Champions League final, allegedly downing more than two bottles of energy drinks before engaging in sexual activity. Witnesses from the hotel staff said the first round of the encounter went on without any noticeable problem.
However, tragedy struck as Dr. Ibikunle allegedly attempted to engage in a second round of sexual activity. According to reports, he slumped suddenly on the bed and became unresponsive. The 200-level student reportedly raised an alarm immediately, drawing hotel staff and management into the room. Despite frantic efforts to revive him, Dr. Ibikunle was confirmed dead at the scene.
The Kogi State Police Command has since taken over the case. The young lady involved is currently in police custody and has provided her statement. She reportedly told investigators that she had no idea how the lecturer died, insisting that she did not harm him or poison him in any way. However, due to the suspicious circumstances surrounding the incident, police are treating the case as a possible homicide pending the outcome of an autopsy.
Sources within the police say that investigators are examining the possibility of cardiac arrest induced by excessive consumption of energy drinks, coupled with intense physical exertion. Yet, they are not ruling out foul play, especially as questions linger over whether any substances may have been involved beyond the energy drinks. Toxicology tests are expected to provide more clarity.
Meanwhile, the news has generated mixed reactions among the university’s student population. Some students who described Dr. Ibikunle as one of the strictest and most feared lecturers in the university were seen jubilating on social media, posting memes, and sarcastic captions mocking the situation. Screenshots of WhatsApp statuses and X posts from students have flooded the internet, with phrases like “Rest in Power, Dr. Energy” and “Karma has no deadline” trending online.
Others have, however, condemned the students’ celebratory reactions, reminding their peers that a life was lost under tragic and scandalous circumstances. Some have expressed sympathy for his wife and children, who are now left to bear the burden of the incident and its public disgrace.
The incident has once again ignited conversations about sexual misconduct and ethics in Nigeria’s higher institutions, where cases of lecturers engaging in intimate relationships with students are frequently reported but often left unaddressed. Many are calling for stricter enforcement of professional conduct codes and the establishment of safer reporting channels for students facing sexual pressure from lecturers.
Beyond the moral questions, the event has also sparked discussions about the dangers of unregulated consumption of energy drinks, especially when mixed with physical stress. Medical experts have long warned that excessive intake of such products can trigger heart attacks, strokes, or other fatal complications, particularly among middle-aged individuals with pre-existing health conditions.
The management of Kogi State University has yet to release an official statement regarding the incident. However, sources from the school confirmed that internal investigations are underway and that the university is cooperating fully with the police. The university community remains tense, with many students awaiting the outcome of the case.
As of now, Dr. Ibikunle’s remains have been deposited at the university’s teaching hospital morgue, pending an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death. His family has been notified, and burial plans are reportedly underway.
This tragic incident serves as a grim reminder of the ethical lapses, health risks, and reputational damage that can arise from inappropriate relationships between lecturers and students. As the investigation continues, the entire Nigerian academic community is watching closely, with hopes that justice and lessons will emerge from this scandal.
