Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), lle-Ife, has issued a new dress code policy outlining strict regulations on student appearance and conduct on campus.
According to the official memo dated June 13, 2025, students who violate the outlined dress codes face rustication for one or two semesters, depending on the severity of the misconduct.
Banned items and styles include sexually provocative clothing, sagging, mini or skimpy dresses, crop tops, dreadlocks, tattoos, multi-colored braids, and facial piercings.
Male students are also prohibited from wearing braids, hair with inscriptions, or plaiting their hair.
Additional restrictions apply to physical interactions between opposite sexes, such as hugging, kissing, or sitting on each other’s laps, which can lead to a two-semester rustication.
The decision has sparked widespread reactions, raising concerns about personal freedom, cultural expression, and gender equity on campus.
