The political rivalry between Governor Dapo Abiodun and former Ogun State governor, now serving senator, Gbenga Daniel, took a dramatic turn on Monday as the state government sealed the ex-governor’s palatial residence and luxury hotel in Sagamu.
Officials from the Sagamu Zonal Planning Office stormed Mr Daniel’s Asoludero Court mansion on Obafemi Awolowo Avenue, GRA, and the nearby Conference Hotel in government-branded vehicles.
The team replaced earlier contraventions and quit notices pasted on Friday with fresh sealing and demolition orders before speeding off.
Eyewitnesses said the officials carried out the operation in a hurried manner, avoiding engagement with occupants.
They reportedly returned after journalists had left the area to post the new notices.
Tension further heightened when a massive campaign poster of Governor Abiodun, announcing his bid for the Ogun East Senatorial seat in 2027, appeared directly opposite Mr Daniel’s mansion.
The sealing came barely 48 hours after the governor dismissed allegations that the action was politically motivated. Mr Abiodun and Mr Daniel both hail from Ogun East Senatorial District, with insiders confirming that the governor’s anticipated senatorial ambition has set him on a collision course with the incumbent.
Party sources told The Gazette that the governor views unseating Mr Daniel as crucial to securing the All Progressives Congress (APC) ticket in 2027. The feud has already deepened divisions within the ruling party, with loyalists of both camps clashing openly in recent months.
Documents sighted by PeoplesGazette showed that the Ogun State Planning and Development Permit Authority accused Mr Daniel’s hotel of being built without a planning permit or adequate setbacks. The notice, issued under the Ogun State Urban and Regional Planning and Development Law No. 61 of 2022, ordered the removal of the contravention within three days or face demolition.
