Oracle co-founder Larry Ellison has become the world’s richest man, overtaking Tesla boss Elon Musk after a surge in Oracle’s share price boosted his fortune.
According to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index, Ellison’s wealth rose to $393 billion (£290bn) on Wednesday, eclipsing Musk’s $385 billion (£284bn). It marks the first time the 80-year-old has topped the global rich list.
Oracle’s stock has jumped more than 40% in recent days, following an earnings report that delivered a stronger-than-expected outlook for its cloud infrastructure business and a string of high-value artificial intelligence (AI) contracts. In its latest quarter, the company projected a 77% increase in cloud revenue this year to $18 billion, with chief executive Safra Catz confirming that Oracle had signed four multibillion-dollar AI deals, with more in the pipeline.
Ellison, who co-founded Oracle in 1977 and still serves as chairman and chief technology officer, has accumulated most of his fortune through the company’s long-term performance. The stock surge cements his decades-long bet on enterprise software and, more recently, on AI-driven demand for data centre infrastructure.
Meanwhile, Musk’s wealth has slipped in line with Tesla’s stock decline. The electric carmaker has faced investor anxiety over the Trump administration’s rollback of EV initiatives, as well as consumer backlash to Musk’s political involvement.
Despite the setback, Musk’s fortune could recover if Tesla’s board approves a proposed compensation package worth more than $1 trillion (£740bn), tied to meeting aggressive growth milestones.
