Four female councillors elected on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos State have died less than two months after their inauguration.
The deaths, first reported by Premium Times occurred between August 13 and September 21, 2025, sparking public concern and speculation.
Those who died are:
Oluwakemi Rufai, councillor for Ward C1, Ibeju-Lekki Local Government Area, who died on August 13 after a brief illness.
Zainab Adeshewa Shotayo, councillor for Ward C3, Odiolowo-Ojuwoye LCDA and Chief Whip of the council, who died on August 18.
Princess Oluremi Ajose, Vice Chairman of Badagry West LCDA, who died on September 20.
Basirat Oluwakemi Mayabikan, councillor for Ward F, Shomolu Local Government, who died on September 21.
The councillors and vice chairman were among local government officials sworn into office on July 27, 2025, following the Lagos council elections.
While the causes of death for Rufai and Shotayo were linked to brief illnesses, no official explanation has been given for the deaths of Ajose and Mayabikan.
The Lagos APC described the deaths as coincidental and urged the public to avoid speculation. Security agencies have not announced any investigation into the matter.
