Former Governor of Oyo State, Oba Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja, has officially been crowned the 44th Olubadan of Ibadanland.
Oba Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja was crowned the 44th Olubadan of Ibadanland on September 26, 2025, in a colorful ceremony at the Ose Meji Temple in Ibadan South-East Local Government Area of Oyo State. Here’s what’s notable about this historic event
Ladoja, who had earlier received the traditional Akoko leaf at the Labosinde Compound, Oja’ba, Ibadan, was expected to be formally presented with the staff and instrument of office by Governor Seyi Makinde at the historic Mapo Hall.
We recalls that Ladoja became Olubadan-designate following the passing of the 43rd Olubadan, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin, who joined his ancestors on Monday, July 7, 2025.
The event was attended by prominent figures, including the President of Nigeria, Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCFR, Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Abimbola Owoade, Soun of Ogbomoso, Oba Ghandi Ọlaoye, Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar III and governors from neighboring states like Lagos, Ogun, Osun, and Ondo.
The new Olubadan is a former Governor of Oyo State, who served from 2003 to 2007. He’s known for his business acumen and commitment to community development.
The Olubadan stool has a distinct succession system, where promotion is based on seniority and chieftaincy lines, rather than birthright. Oba Ladoja’s ascension is a testament to his perseverance and dedication to Ibadan’s traditions.
The Oyo State Governor cut short his annual leave to attend the coronation and will formally present Oba Ladoja with the staff and instrument of office at Mapo Hall.
The event drew thousands of residents and visitors, with cultural performances, traditional drums, and a heavy security presence ensuring a peaceful celebration.
