Reno Omokri has disclosed that he personally went to apologise to Bola Tinubu over past remarks in which he called him a “drug baron,” before being designated as an ambassador.
Speaking in a recent interview on Channels Television, Omokri said the private apology took place on 1 October 2024 and was later reinforced publicly across multiple TV platforms.
He described the move as principled, aimed at correcting the record rather than seeking personal gain.
Omokri explained that his reversal followed verified facts, including investigations in Chicago and the Supreme Court’s October 2023 ruling exonerating Tinubu from allegations of drug involvement and educational forgery.
He added that his previous reluctance to accept government appointments, which he had described as “not in my DNA,” no longer applied after these findings.
Many Nigerians questioned his integrity, with social media users highlighting the tension between political loyalty and public accountability, particularly amid ongoing economic hardships and public demands for transparency from officials.
Political observers say Omokri’s reversal underscores the delicate balance between personal conviction and political ambition in Nigeria.
While some view his apology as an act of national service, critics argue it undermines consistency and credibility, fueling debates about integrity, trust, and accountability in the country’s political class.
