Ruben Amorim apologised to Manchester United fans following their 3-1 loss to Brighton on Sunday, telling them they should expect to witness even more suffering. The Old Trafford loss marked their sixth at home in the league this season as they sit 13th in the table, with a string of poor performances leading to Amorim branding his side “maybe the worst team in the history of Manchester United”.
Ruben Amorim told Manchester United fans that they are “going to suffer” after their latest defeat, before he suggested his side are “maybe the worst team in the history” of the club.
United went down 3-1 to Brighton & Hove Albion in the Premier League on Sunday, marking their fourth loss at home in their last five games at Old Trafford.
Amorim, who replaced Erik ten Hag in the dugout in November, branded the result and his club’s home form as “unacceptable”.
“Another loss at home. It’s not acceptable, the way we suffered the goals,” the Portuguese said.
“We can play some football in small spaces of time, it’s not consistent and we get nervous, and then we suffer a goal.
“And then it’s really hard to turn things around. We get really anxious, really nervous. They were better again.”
After heading into the break a goal apiece, a second-half clinic from The Seagulls was enough to exploit United’s weaknesses.
Kaoru Mitoma restored Brighton’s lead before Georginio Rutter capitalised on a mistake from goalkeeper Andre Onana, who parried the ball into the Frenchman’s path for him to easily score.
The error buried any chance that United had of a comeback and Brighton easily saw out the game.
“They were comfortable,” Amorim continued.
“We tried, not with very good football, but I think you can see this game and you can remember Bournemouth [a 3-0 defeat], you can remember Nottingham [a 3-2 defeat].
“We were in the game and then we suffer goals that we cannot suffer, and then it’s really hard for everybody.”
Despite yet another disastrous outing for United, Amorim doubled down on his style of play.
“We lost again at home. It’s really not acceptable. We need to change that and we need to change fast,” he said.
“I’m not going to change the way I see the game, I’m very clear on that. I’m really sorry, the fans are going to suffer.
“I have one way of doing things, I know it’s going to [produce] results. But we need to survive this moment. I think it’s very clear for everybody what we are going to do.”
Having fired just one shot on target in 90 minutes against Brighton, Amorim was quick to admit that his entire side are underperforming but was powerless to explain why.
“It is hard to explain, we have to acknowledge the moment and not go around the problem,” he said.
“Everybody here is underperforming, no matter what the circumstances. It is unacceptable to lose so many games for any club in the Premier League, never mind for Manchester United. It is a really hard moment, but we have to continue.
“We are maybe the worst team in the history of Manchester United. We have to acknowledge that and change that.
“You are getting a new coach who is losing more than the last coach. Imagine that. We need to survive this moment. I know that.”
United get a brief respite from domestic woes as they make their UEFA Europa League return against Rangers on January 23, before they travel to face Fulham in the league on January 26.
