Fresh details have emerged regarding the tragic accident involving a 14-seater passenger bus en route from Ijebu Ode to Ibadan, which occurred on the bridge just after Awa. Contrary to earlier reports, the vehicle was not an 18-seater, and while the death toll remains heartbreaking, four individuals, including the driver, survived the crash.
According to eyewitness in correspondence with MarvelTvUpdates, the driver was trapped in the river for nearly two hours before being rescued. The vehicle was stuck in a difficult position, making the rescue efforts extremely challenging.
Tragically, among the passengers were children, as well as a family—father, mother, and their children—all caught in the devastating incident.
No one can say exactly what led to the crash, but the swift response of policemen at the scene, members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), and concerned bystanders was commendable. They worked tirelessly to save lives and assist the injured.
A passenger who was in a separate vehicle at the time shared his emotional experience. “The driver of the vehicle I was in recognized the bus driver and kept shouting, ‘Oremi ni o’ (He’s my friend). He brought out a rope and joined others in the rescue. We were there for over two hours trying to help.”
He also described the heartbreaking moment when a woman, initially crying out in pain, suddenly went silent as the vehicle was being pulled from the river. Rescue teams, including NURTW members, used an axe to cut into the vehicle in a desperate bid to save the trapped driver.
This tragedy has left a deep scar on all who witnessed it, and once again highlights the urgent need for safer roads and quicker emergency response systems.
