Media personality and philanthropist Oriyomi Hamzat has strongly denied any personal or professional connection with Islamic cleric Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, dismissing recent allegations linking him to the controversial figure.
Speaking in a recent statement, Hamzat said he has “never met Sheikh Ahmad Gumi in my life,” and insisted that claims suggesting otherwise are false and misleading. He also stated that he has previously criticized Gumi’s public remarks, questioning why authorities permit him to move freely despite accusations related to sympathy for armed groups.
Hamzat further rejected reports alleging that he invited the cleric to the University of Ibadan, describing the claim as entirely fabricated.
Addressing separate allegations that he supports the enforcement of Sharia law, Hamzat dismissed the claims as baseless. He emphasized that he respects all religions and does not impose his beliefs on others.
According to him, his orphanage accommodates children from different faith backgrounds, with some attending church services, while his workforce includes both Christians and Muslims. He also noted that he has sponsored individuals for both Christian pilgrimages to Jerusalem and Islamic pilgrimage to Mecca.
Describing himself as “a lover of humanity,” Hamzat said he is considering legal action against those responsible for spreading what he called false and damaging allegations.
