The Oluwo of Iwo, Oba Abdulrasheed Adewale Akanbi, has described Sharia law as the most effective solution to Nigeria’s growing insecurity, arguing that its full implementation would significantly reduce criminal activities, including banditry.
Speaking in a video that has since generated reactions online, the monarch dismissed claims that Islam encourages violence, pointing to countries such as Saudi Arabia, Oman, and the United Arab Emirates as examples of nations where banditry is virtually non-existent despite their strong Islamic foundations.
According to the traditional ruler, Sharia law represents the divine laws of Allah and could help restore order and discipline across the country if properly implemented.
“Sharia law is the best solution for Nigeria. It is the word of Allah. If Sharia is fully implemented, bandits will run away,” Oba Oluwo said.
He questioned critics who associate Islam with banditry, asking why countries like Saudi Arabia, Oman, and Dubai do not experience the same security challenges.
“Some people say Islam breeds bandits, but do you see bandits in Mecca, Dubai, or Oman? What is wrong with those making such claims?” he asked.
The monarch further stated that bandits would never invade Iwo, attributing the town’s safety to its belief in God. He argued that communities experiencing persistent attacks are suffering because they have turned away from divine principles.
“Bandits can never invade Iwo. Even if they attack other states, they will never come to Iwo because we believe in Allah. Those being attacked are victims because they do not listen to God,” he said.
Oba Oluwo’s remarks have sparked discussions on social media, with supporters praising his stance on moral discipline and governance, while critics argue that Nigeria’s security challenges require broader, more inclusive solutions beyond religious law.
