The Minister of Youth Development, Ayodele Olawande, has announced that the Federal Government has approved reforms that will replace the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) khaki uniform with Adire fabric.
He made this known during an appearance on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief, explaining that the move is aimed at boosting local textile production and ensuring that government spending supports Nigerian-made goods.
According to him, Adire is widely produced in states such as Ogun and Kwara, and the policy is intended to strengthen the domestic economy.
Olawande also revealed that the NYSC posting system will be reviewed to better align corps members with their academic qualifications.
Under the new arrangement, graduates especially those with education-related degrees will be deployed to schools based on their training and skills, rather than the current general posting system.
On security concerns, the minister said the government is considering a system that allows corps members to be posted within regions where they studied or are familiar with, particularly in areas affected by insecurity.
He also noted that this approach would ease concerns from parents and improve the practicality of deployments.
He added that participation in postings outside familiar regions would remain voluntary for those who choose to serve elsewhere.
Addressing reports that the military would be removed from the NYSC structure, Olawande dismissed the claim, clarifying that the military will continue to play a role in providing security for corps members.
The minister further explained that the reform only shifts operational leadership toward civilian management, not the removal of military involvement.
The reforms, approved by the Federal Executive Council (FEC), are part of a broader effort to reposition the NYSC into a more skills-driven and productivity-focused institution. The government also plans to amend the NYSC Act to support full implementation of the new framework.
